UROBILINOGEN
The Urobilinogen test measures the level of urobilinogen in the urine, a substance formed from the breakdown of bilirubin in the intestine. A small amount of urobilinogen is normally present in urine, as it is partially reabsorbed into the bloodstream and excreted by the kidneys.
Abnormal urobilinogen levels can indicate various health conditions. Increased levels may be seen in liver diseases such as hepatitis or cirrhosis, and in conditions involving excessive breakdown of red blood cells (hemolysis). Decreased or absent urobilinogen may suggest bile duct obstruction or impaired bile flow. Doctors often recommend this test as part of routine urine analysis or when evaluating liver function.
The test is simple and requires a urine sample. Accurate results help doctors assess liver health, detect bile flow abnormalities, and guide further diagnostic evaluation and treatment
