TIBC
The Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC) test measures the blood’s ability to bind and transport iron with the help of a protein called transferrin. It reflects how much iron the blood can carry and is an important parameter for assessing iron metabolism in the body. TIBC is often evaluated along with serum iron and ferritin to get a complete picture of iron status.
A high TIBC level usually indicates iron deficiency, as the body increases its capacity to bind more iron. A low TIBC level may be seen in conditions such as chronic diseases, malnutrition, liver disorders, or iron overload states like hemochromatosis. Doctors commonly recommend this test when symptoms like fatigue, weakness, or anemia are present, or for monitoring iron-related conditions.
The TIBC test is simple and requires a small blood sample. Accurate results help healthcare professionals diagnose iron deficiency or overload, guide treatment decisions, and ensure effective management of a patient’s overall health.
