The Stool Reducing Substances test is used to detect the presence of unabsorbed sugars in the stool. It helps evaluate carbohydrate digestion and absorption in the intestines. Normally, sugars are broken down and absorbed in the small intestine, so their presence in stool indicates a possible malabsorption problem.
A positive test may suggest conditions such as lactose intolerance, carbohydrate malabsorption, or certain intestinal infections that impair digestion. It is commonly recommended in infants and children with symptoms like chronic diarrhea, bloating, gas, or failure to thrive. In adults, it may be used when malabsorption syndromes are suspected.
