The Serum Uric Acid (Serum U.A.) test measures the amount of uric acid present in the blood. Uric acid is a waste product formed during the breakdown of purines, which are found in certain foods and are also produced by the body. It is normally filtered by the kidneys and excreted through urine.
High uric acid levels may lead to conditions such as gout, characterized by joint pain, swelling, and inflammation, or may be associated with kidney stones and reduced kidney function. Low levels are less common but can occur in certain metabolic or liver disorders. This test is often recommended when patients experience joint pain, suspected gout, or as part of routine health check-ups.
