SERUM MYOGLOBIN
The Serum Myoglobin test measures the level of myoglobin, a protein found in muscle tissue that helps store and release oxygen. When muscle cells are damaged, myoglobin is released into the bloodstream, making this test useful for detecting muscle injury.
Elevated myoglobin levels may indicate muscle damage due to conditions such as heart attack (myocardial infarction), severe muscle injury, trauma, or muscle diseases. It rises quickly after muscle injury, often earlier than other markers, but is not specific to the heart alone. Therefore, it is usually interpreted along with other tests like CPK-MB or troponin for accurate diagnosis.
The Serum Myoglobin test is simple and requires a small blood sample. Accurate results help doctors detect early muscle or cardiac injury, monitor treatment, and ensure timely medical intervention.
