Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) is a blood test that measures the average size and volume of red blood cells (RBCs). It is an important parameter included in the Complete Blood Count (CBC) and helps in evaluating different types of anemia and other blood-related conditions. By analyzing the size of red blood cells, doctors can better understand underlying health issues.

A low MCV value indicates smaller-than-normal red blood cells (microcytic), which is commonly seen in iron deficiency anemia or certain chronic diseases. A high MCV value indicates larger-than-normal red blood cells (macrocytic), which may be associated with vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiency, liver disease, or other medical conditions. Normal MCV values suggest healthy red blood cell size and proper functioning.

The MCV test is simple and requires a small blood sample. Accurate results assist healthcare professionals in diagnosing and classifying anemia, guiding appropriate treatment, and monitoring a patient’s overall blood health.
