The Lupus Anticoagulant (LA) test is a blood test used to detect specific antibodies that interfere with the normal blood clotting process. Despite its name, the presence of lupus anticoagulant does not necessarily mean a person has lupus; rather, it is associated with an increased risk of abnormal blood clot formation (thrombosis).

A positive Lupus Anticoagulant test may be seen in conditions such as antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), autoimmune disorders (including systemic lupus erythematosus), recurrent miscarriages, or unexplained blood clots. These antibodies can prolong clotting tests like APTT but paradoxically increase the risk of clotting in the body. Doctors often recommend this test in patients with a history of repeated clotting events or pregnancy complications.

The test is performed using a blood sample and may include a series of specialized coagulation tests. Accurate results help doctors diagnose autoimmune-related clotting disorders, assess risk, and guide appropriate treatment to prevent complications.
