The Lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] test measures the level of a specific type of lipoprotein in the blood that is genetically determined and associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Lp(a) is similar to LDL (“bad cholesterol”) but contains an additional protein called apolipoprotein(a), which makes it more likely to contribute to plaque buildup in arteries.

Elevated Lp(a) levels are considered a significant risk factor for conditions such as atherosclerosis, heart attack, and stroke, even if other cholesterol levels are normal. Since Lp(a) levels are largely inherited, this test is especially useful for individuals with a family history of early heart disease or unexplained cardiovascular events. It is often recommended as part of a detailed cardiac risk assessment.

The Lipoprotein (a) test is simple and requires a small blood sample. Accurate results help doctors identify hidden cardiovascular risks, guide preventive strategies, and recommend appropriate lifestyle or medical interventions for better heart health.
