LE CELL
The LE Cell test is a blood test used to help diagnose autoimmune disorders, particularly systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). It detects the presence of LE cells, which are white blood cells that have engulfed the nucleus of another cell that has been altered by autoimmune antibodies. This phenomenon occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissues.
A positive LE Cell test may indicate lupus or other autoimmune conditions, although it is not highly specific and has largely been replaced by more advanced tests such as ANA (Antinuclear Antibody) testing. It may be recommended when a patient shows symptoms like joint pain, skin rashes, fatigue, fever, or other signs suggestive of autoimmune disease.
The LE Cell test is performed using a blood sample and requires microscopic examination. While it is less commonly used today, it still provides supportive information in certain clinical cases. Accurate diagnosis through appropriate testing helps doctors manage autoimmune disorders effectively and provide proper treatment.
