LDL CHOL
The LDL Cholesterol test measures the level of Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) in the blood, commonly known as “bad cholesterol.” LDL carries cholesterol to the tissues, but high levels can lead to the buildup of fatty deposits (plaques) in the walls of blood vessels, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Elevated LDL cholesterol levels are associated with conditions such as atherosclerosis, heart attack, and other cardiovascular diseases. Low LDL levels are generally considered beneficial for heart health. This test is usually performed as part of a lipid profile and is recommended for individuals with risk factors like obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of heart disease.
The LDL Cholesterol test is simple and requires a small blood sample, often taken after fasting. Accurate results help doctors assess cardiovascular risk, guide treatment plans, and recommend lifestyle modifications such as a healthy diet, regular exercise, and medications if necessary.
