IRON & TIBC
The Iron & Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC) test is used to evaluate the level of iron in the blood and the body’s ability to transport it. Serum iron measures the amount of circulating iron, while TIBC reflects the capacity of transferrin (a protein) to bind and carry iron in the bloodstream. Together, these parameters provide a clear picture of iron metabolism and availability in the body.
Low serum iron with high TIBC is commonly seen in iron deficiency anemia, whereas high iron with low TIBC may indicate conditions like iron overload (hemochromatosis) or certain chronic diseases. This test is often recommended when patients have symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, pale skin, or when anemia is suspected. It is also used along with ferritin and other tests to accurately diagnose iron-related disorders.
The Iron & TIBC test is simple and requires a small blood sample. Accurate results help doctors diagnose iron deficiency or overload, monitor treatment, and ensure proper management of a patient’s nutritional and overall health.
