HDL CHOL
The HDL Cholesterol test measures the level of High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) in the blood, often referred to as “good cholesterol.” HDL helps remove excess cholesterol from the bloodstream and carries it back to the liver for elimination, thereby protecting against the buildup of fatty deposits in blood vessels.
Higher levels of HDL cholesterol are beneficial and are associated with a lower risk of heart disease and stroke. Low HDL levels, on the other hand, may increase the risk of cardiovascular problems, especially when combined with high LDL cholesterol or triglycerides. This test is commonly performed as part of a lipid profile to assess overall heart health.
The HDL test is simple and requires a small blood sample, often taken after fasting. Accurate results help doctors evaluate cardiovascular risk, guide treatment decisions, and recommend lifestyle changes such as exercise, healthy diet, and weight management for better heart health.
