G6PD (QUALITATIVE)
The G6PD (Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase) Qualitative test is used to detect the presence or deficiency of the G6PD enzyme in red blood cells. This enzyme plays a crucial role in protecting red blood cells from oxidative damage. A deficiency can lead to the premature destruction of red blood cells (hemolysis), especially when exposed to certain medications, infections, or foods like fava beans.
A deficient (positive) result indicates G6PD deficiency, a genetic condition that can cause symptoms such as sudden anemia, jaundice, dark-colored urine, fatigue, and shortness of breath. A normal (negative) result suggests adequate enzyme activity. This test is often recommended for individuals with a history of unexplained hemolytic anemia, neonatal jaundice, or before prescribing certain medications.
The G6PD qualitative test is simple and requires a small blood sample. It helps in early detection of enzyme deficiency, allowing patients to take necessary precautions and avoid triggers that may lead to hemolytic episodes, ensuring better health management.
