FETAL HAEMOGLOBIN
The Fetal Hemoglobin (HbF) test measures the level of fetal hemoglobin present in the blood. HbF is the primary type of hemoglobin found in unborn babies, which helps in efficient oxygen transfer from the mother to the fetus. After birth, HbF levels gradually decrease and are replaced by adult hemoglobin (HbA). However, small amounts of HbF may still be present in adults.
Elevated levels of HbF in older children or adults may indicate certain blood disorders such as thalassemia, sickle cell disease, or other hemoglobinopathies. This test is often recommended when there is unexplained anemia, suspected genetic blood disorders, or as part of hemoglobin evaluation studies like hemoglobin electrophoresis.
The HbF test is simple and requires a small blood sample. Accurate results help doctors diagnose inherited blood conditions, monitor treatment, and assess overall hemoglobin composition, ensuring appropriate medical care.
