The Direct Coombs Test (D.C.T.), also known as the Direct Antiglobulin Test (DAT), is a blood test used to detect antibodies or complement proteins attached directly to the surface of red blood cells. It helps determine whether red blood cells are being destroyed prematurely by the body’s immune system, a condition known as hemolysis.

A positive D.C.T. result may indicate autoimmune hemolytic anemia, hemolytic disease of the newborn, or reactions following blood transfusion. It is commonly recommended in cases of unexplained anemia, jaundice, or when there is suspicion of immune-related destruction of red blood cells. A negative result generally suggests that there are no antibodies bound to red blood cells.

The D.C.T. test is simple and requires a small blood sample. Accurate results help doctors diagnose immune-related blood disorders, monitor treatment, and ensure proper patient care.
