Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA) is a protein that can be found in the blood and is commonly used as a tumor marker. The CEA test is primarily used to help monitor certain cancers, particularly colorectal cancer, and may also be elevated in cancers of the stomach, pancreas, lung, breast, and other organs. CEA levels can also increase due to non-cancerous conditions such as smoking, inflammation, or certain liver and digestive disorders, so the test is not generally used alone to diagnose cancer. Results should be interpreted by a qualified healthcare professional along with clinical history and other diagnostic investigations.
