BUN
The Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) test measures the amount of nitrogen present in the blood in the form of urea, a waste product formed in the liver during protein metabolism. Urea is normally filtered by the kidneys and excreted through urine, making BUN an important indicator of kidney function.
Elevated BUN levels may suggest kidney dysfunction, dehydration, high protein intake, or conditions that reduce blood flow to the kidneys such as heart failure. Low BUN levels are less common but may be seen in liver disease, malnutrition, or overhydration. Doctors often recommend this test as part of routine health check-ups or when evaluating kidney and metabolic health.
The BUN test is simple and requires a small blood sample. Accurate results help doctors assess kidney function, diagnose underlying conditions, and monitor treatment effectively for better overall health management.
