BENCE JONES PROTEINS
The Bence Jones Protein (BJP) test detects abnormal light chain proteins in the urine, which are produced by plasma cells. These proteins are not normally present in urine and their detection is an important marker for certain blood and bone marrow disorders.
A positive BJP test is commonly associated with conditions like multiple myeloma and other plasma cell disorders. It may also be seen in some cases of lymphoma. This test is usually recommended when symptoms such as bone pain, weakness, frequent infections, or unexplained anemia are present, or when a plasma cell disorder is suspected.
The test typically requires a urine sample, often collected over 24 hours for better accuracy. Accurate results help doctors diagnose and monitor these conditions, guide further investigations, and ensure appropriate treatment and management.
