Apolipoprotein A-1
The Apolipoprotein A-1 (Apo A-1) test measures the level of Apo A-1, a major protein component of High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL or “good cholesterol”) in the blood. It plays a key role in removing excess cholesterol from tissues and transporting it to the liver for elimination, thereby helping protect against the buildup of fatty deposits in arteries.
Low levels of Apo A-1 are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and stroke, while higher levels are considered protective for heart health. This test is often recommended along with other lipid profile tests to provide a more detailed assessment of cardiovascular risk, especially in individuals with a family history of heart disease or abnormal cholesterol levels.
The Apo A-1 test is simple and requires a small blood sample. Accurate results help doctors evaluate heart disease risk more precisely, guide treatment decisions, and recommend lifestyle changes for maintaining optimal cardiovascular health.
