ALKALINE PHOSPHATASE
The Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) test measures the level of ALP enzyme in the blood. This enzyme is mainly found in the liver, bile ducts, and bones, and plays an important role in metabolic processes. The test is commonly used to assess liver function and bone health.
Elevated ALP levels may indicate liver conditions such as bile duct obstruction, hepatitis, or liver disease. It can also be increased in bone-related conditions like bone disorders, fractures, or increased bone growth (especially in children). Low ALP levels are less common but may be associated with certain nutritional deficiencies or metabolic conditions. Doctors often recommend this test when symptoms like jaundice, bone pain, or abnormal liver function are suspected.
The ALP test is simple and requires a small blood sample. Accurate results help doctors diagnose liver and bone disorders, monitor treatment, and ensure proper management of a patient’s health.
