Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) is a protein produced primarily by the developing liver of a fetus and is normally present at higher levels during pregnancy. An AFP blood test measures the amount of this protein in the blood and is commonly used as part of prenatal screening to assess the risk of certain fetal conditions. In adults, AFP testing may also be used as a tumor marker to help evaluate and monitor certain liver diseases and cancers, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma, as well as some germ-cell tumors.
