ACID PHOSPHATASE
The Acid Phosphatase test measures the level of acid phosphatase enzyme in the blood. This enzyme is found in various tissues of the body, particularly in the prostate gland, liver, spleen, and red blood cells. The test is mainly used to evaluate certain medical conditions, especially those related to the prostate.
Elevated acid phosphatase levels may be associated with prostate disorders, including prostate cancer, especially when it has spread beyond the gland. It can also be increased in conditions such as liver disease, bone disorders, or hemolysis (destruction of red blood cells). Due to the availability of more specific tests like PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen), this test is used less frequently today but may still be helpful in certain clinical situations.
The Acid Phosphatase test is simple and requires a small blood sample. Accurate results help doctors assess specific conditions, monitor disease progression, and guide appropriate treatment when needed.
