ABSOLUTE NEUTROPHIL
The Absolute Neutrophil Count (ANC) test measures the number of neutrophils, a type of white blood cell, present in the blood. Neutrophils are the body’s first line of defense against bacterial and fungal infections, playing a crucial role in protecting the immune system and maintaining overall health.
A high neutrophil count (neutrophilia) may indicate bacterial infections, inflammation, physical stress, or certain medical conditions. A low neutrophil count (neutropenia) can increase the risk of infections and may be seen in conditions such as viral infections, bone marrow disorders, autoimmune diseases, or as a side effect of chemotherapy and certain medications. Doctors often recommend this test when patients have frequent infections, fever, or weakened immunity.
The ANC test is simple and requires a small blood sample, usually performed as part of a Complete Blood Count (CBC). Accurate results help doctors assess infection risk, monitor treatment, and manage immune-related conditions effectively.
