ABSOLUTE LYMPHOCYTES
The Absolute Lymphocyte Count (ALC) test measures the number of lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell, present in the blood. Lymphocytes play a key role in the body’s immune system by helping to fight infections, including viruses and bacteria, and by supporting overall immune defense mechanisms.
An increased lymphocyte count may indicate viral infections, chronic infections, or certain blood disorders such as leukemia, while a decreased count may be seen in conditions like weakened immunity, severe infections, autoimmune diseases, or as a side effect of medications such as steroids or chemotherapy. Doctors often recommend this test when patients have symptoms like fever, recurrent infections, fatigue, or unexplained illness.
The ALC test is simple and requires a small blood sample. It is usually performed as part of a Complete Blood Count (CBC). Accurate results help healthcare professionals evaluate immune function, diagnose infections, and monitor various medical conditions effectively.
